Chapel of Santo António do Alto

The Ermida de Santo António do Alto, in Faro, is the result of the association of a 15th century hermitage with a Gothic-medieval watchtower, erected - in accordance with its function as a lookout - at the highest point in the region.

The tower was built in 1355, during the reign of King Afonso IV, to complete the city's defence system, with the temple on the ground floor. The complex helped define an important axis of the town, Rua de Santo António do Alto, which, starting from the riverside area, separated the neighbourhoods of Mouraria and Judiaria de Faro, followed the location of the old Alcaçarias and ended at this elevation, then located some distance from the urban core.

From the tower you can see a fantastic landscape that stretches from the barrocal to the sea and from Olhão to Quarteira!
